WEEK FOUR

~DAY TWO - MONDAY~

I wake up at the same time that Emily does, and remind her that today is the first day of my new job, on the Geek Squad. She doesn’t remember that I told her. After I read the paper, take care of the three S’s, and get dressed, I head out the door. In the car I get a text from Emily.

Thx 4 taking the car

What do you mean? It’s MY car

ive ben usin it.

Why don’t you get your car back?

ill jst git a cab. thx again

I’m really not sure why you’re mad at me. I have a job that I have to drive to.

She doesn’t give a response and I walk into Best Buy with my uniform on and a feeling that this is going to be the first day in a trend of bad days. Working in retail, even the side that works with the customer after the sale, is going to be rough.

My boss starts in as soon as I get there. “So, Mark, the first week is basically just observing each section of the job. You’ll be with the front for the first day, and seeing how the squad interacts with the customers here in the store, then throughout the week you’ll be able to see each side of the operation. We want you to basically learn by imitation. Does that make sense?”

“Yeah, no problem.”

“Excellent, you’ll be with Tina, today.”

She introduces us, and I am positive that there are no guidelines on the appearance of the Geek Squad, Tina proves this.

On the other side of the room I see a line forming for the registers. Almost all of the people have a Blu-ray player.

“Tina, what’s up with the Blu-ray players, are they on sale or something?”

“Nope, they’ve just been selling like crazy for the past few months. Them, and the Blu-ray drives for computers. I guess everyone is looking for that crystal-clear picture.” As soon as she says it, I feel like she’s in the program. Maybe I’m just paranoid. “Have you experienced Blu-ray yet?”

“Yeah, I’ve had it for a few weeks now. It’s a great picture.”

“I just read on my Kindle that Blu-ray is going to take over as the dominant form of movies within five years.”

I really need a Kindle and she’s definitely in the program. The line keeps getting longer, with more Blu-ray players and readers.

“Mark, did you hear me?”

“Yeah, Blu-ray is taking over.”

Throughout the day she tries to talk about different news articles that she’s read on her Kindle and I can feel my face getting more red, every time a customer walks away and she tries to explain some other news article she’s read.

“Tina, number one, you only need to talk about ONE article a day, and two, I don’t care!”

“Wait, what? How—”

“I’m sorry, I just need a break, I’ll be back in a few, okay?”

“Oh, yeah, yeah, take fifteen.”

I walk out to my car for my break and there’s a note under the windshield wiper blade.

Mark,

We didn’t think you would actually follow through with it.
